Shelter to Home

Our MOTTO: We pass on furniture and house hold goods only if they are clean and in good condition. We have no facility or funds to clean and repair furniture.

Volunteers operate the program in a small, rented storage unit, the size of a 3 car garage. There are times when it is filled to capacity and we cannot accept donations.

Donations: If you wish to donate furniture or household goods, please call Ruth Kershaw at 604-929-0421 and leave a message. A volunteer will return your call and arrange for a convenient time to visit and select those items suitable for our clients. If possible, the volunteer will take smaller items with them and arrange for larger items to be picked up. It is a significant help if you can bring your donation to us. If not, we have to pay a moving contractor from our limited funds. Donations are requested to help offset transportation costs and receipts will be issued for donations of $20 or more.

Our needs: Most of our clients are men moving to small accommodations.

Furniture:

• Couches preferably dark, plain, no longer than 84 inches. We cannot accept floral prints or hide-a-beds except if a client has specifically requested these.
• Love seats
• Comfortable chairs
• Recliners
• Coffee tables
• End tables
• Floor lamps
• Table lamps for living room and bed room
• Kitchen/Dinette Tables no larger than 48 inches in diameter or 48 inches long
• Kitchen/Dinette table Chairs
• Small bookcases, small desks
• Box springs, mattresses and metal bed frames. We don’t have storage space for head and foot boards. We need twin, double and queen-size beds.
• Bed side tables
• Dressers chest of drawers no wider than 42 inches. We have no storage space for mirrors.
• TVs and TV stands, DVD players small and medium TVs only please (under 24 inches)
• Radios, Clocks and Clock-radios
• Portable microwaves

Household goods:

• Bed Linen
• Twin, double and queen-size sheet sets. It helps greatly if you label them as sets ( top sheet, bottom fitted sheet & pillow cases).
• Twin, double and queen-size blankets and comforters
• Pillows and protective pillow slips
• Towel sets Bath towel, hand towel, face cloths. Helpful if wrapped in sets. Packages of new face cloths.
• Dish towels and cloths
• Shower curtains and hooks
• Dishes
• sets of 4 (plate, side plate, bowl, mug or cup)
• Cutlery
• sets of 4
• Drinking glasses
• Electric kettles, toasters, and coffee pots
• Pots and pans
• Mixing bowls, cookie sheets, cake pans, wooden spoons, spatulas, measuring cups and spoons
• Kitchen Utensil sets
• egg flipper, serving spoons, potato masher, can opener, peeler, sharp knives
• Tea pots
• Casserole dishes small and medium

Unfortunately we have no room to store carpets, art work, dining room sets, entertainment units, fine china or crystal, over stuffed furniture.

Meter Installers will be clearly identified with uniforms and photo identification.

We do not require access to your unit. You don’t need to be home, we will work with your property manager/strata to gain access to the electrical meters.

You will experience a brief power interruption, in most cases it will last 60 seconds. We recognize the inconvenience this may cause and will restore service safely and as efficiently as possible.

If you have a home security system, there is a chance that the alarm may be triggered, similar to when there is a power outage. If you have any concerns, please talk to your security provider.

THE DISRUPTIONS TO WATER USE ARE MINIMAL

• Water pressure may be reduced and vary temporarily
• You may experience temporary discoloration of water. If so, run cold water in the bath tub until it cleans up
• Refrain from using the washing machine during and immediately after flushing. Washing an empty load prior to use is advisable

CONTAMINATION FINES WILL BE LEVIED AGAINST THE STRATA IF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE PLACED IN THE DUMPSTER.

• Refundable beverage containers (excluding milk cartons)
• Blue box recyclables (including glass, metal and plastic type 1,2,4 and 5 containers)
• Paint, solvent, flammable liquids, gasoline and pesticides
• Oil, oil filters and empty containers
• Medications, pharmaceuticals
• Lead-free (car) batteries), automobile bodies, refrigeration units
• Tires, yard and garden waste, dead animals
• Gypsum drywall, asbestos, barrels, drums, propane tanks, treated wood.

The North Vancouver RCMP is notifying the public of over 100 incidences of marketing fraud in which local residents have been targeted during the past month.
In the past four weeks alone, North Vancouver residents have recieved personally addressed “Advance Fee Fraud Letters” by letterpost.

I am sending this email to inform you that there was a Break & Enter in the 4100 Block of Glenhaven Crescent last night [Dec 8]. (The Block Watch Captain position is currently vacant.) Fortunately alert neighbours saw the suspect and called 911. The police responded quickly and the suspects were caught, arrested and will be charged. This is a great success story of prompt reporting and how the public assists the police in catching criminals!

[This is a reminder to ensure your] doors and windows are always locked, and especially during this holiday season. It’s a good time to also remind people to remove ALL valuables from their vehicles (even spare change) and keep your vehicle locked as well. Try to keep your entrance ways well lit at night and perhaps have a motion light on your driveway, carport or back yard.
